Early flowering, tufted perennial grass
10-100 cm in height
Strongly scented with Coumarin (resembling a smell of vanilla when taking a cut)
Found in a large selection of soils (sand- clay & dry-wet) and habitats (grasslands, meadows, pastures, open woodlands, heath and moorland) 
Found naturally in the UK
At one stage very popular in seed mixtures for hay, but not always very palatable due to a high stem to leaf ratio
Slow to establish, best sown with other fine grasses
Not normally sown straight (approx 8-10 kg if needed to be) and 0.1-0.5 kg in mixtures
