Dave Hodgson, Head Groundsman at Kirkstall Education Cricket Club in Leeds. "Hurrells are my number one supplier of grass seed. Their mixes are top rated, prices are competitive and their personal service and delivery is second to none. They make mixtures to suit my particular requirements as a Cricket Groundsman

John Dodds, Head Groundsman at Scarborough Cricket Club (Outfield Groundsman of the year). " I have used Hurrells Grass Seeds throughout my career as a cricket groundsman and I have always been impressed with their quality standards and performance of their grass seeds, I have used them for many years at Scarborough Cricket Club now"

Mike Corley  “My association with Hurrells goes back to the mid 1980’s when Nick Gladstone a partner in Hurrell & McLean came to see me at the Scarborough Cricket Club. I was the Head Groundsman and Nick Gladstone of Hurrell & McLean: had the foresight to see the new opportunities in developing a professional amenity sales and was the driving force behind the growth of amenity sales . This was the beginning of the successful relationship that still continues and has given me a great deal of satisfaction and pride. A professional range of mixtures has been developed for a wide range of sporting requirements through the regular meetings and discussions that Nick and I had at various sporting venues over the years. These exclusive mixtures have been used at the highest level in cricket maintenance. The choice of these mixtures was significant in helping me achieve the accolades and awards bestowed on me by the TCCB. I developed my career as a freelance consultant involving me in many turf projects for many prestigious sports venues. I supervised trials at the Sports Turf Research Institute at Bingley. These trials were developed at the behest of the English Cricket Board to form an analytical database. These were of paramount importance for the progress of the game of cricket. Nick and I meet formally on a regular basis throughout the year to discuss new cultivars that can be incorporated into the mixtures to continue the improvement of the professional range. Hurrells do not sit back and rest on their laurels, the company are continuously improving the level of service and development of new opportunities with their customers. In my opinion Hurrells must be proud of what they have achieved since moving to their present location in Cranswick. The new warehouse built in 2002 with racking for pallets and a new mixing plant has continued to improve service levels. The company regularly provide the purity and germination on seed lots ensuring that the highest quality is maintained. I am very proud of my association with Hurrells and I hope it continues for some time to come.

Peter Cotton, Turfgear, Bowling Green Specialists. "I was very impressed with the way the BG.2 Green Baize mixture quickly established itself under extremely difficult conditions. These new dwarf ryegrasses are quick to establish and seem to produce a dense sward with superb colour. I will definitely use them again for renovation work on Bowling Greens."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

David Pack, Professional Groundsman & Polo Specialist. " I have been a groundsman for many years now and the specialised expertise that Hurrells provide, whether it is for Polo Grounds, Cricket Squares or Lawns is a huge support for me"

Agricultural

Richard Mortimore of RPM Investments Ltd, Home Farm, Pease Pottage, Sussex. “I run a 250 acre organic beef suckler herd in Sussex, on High Weald Tunbridge Wells Sands. The land is naturally very acid and thin on content, being a heathland habitat. I’ve had the farm 6 years and have endeavoured to improve the soil and the crops. Being organic I chose to use leys to improve soil and increase feedstock. My interest in grass relies on the writings of the ’old masters’; men such as Robert Elliot, Sir George Stapleton, Friend Sykes and many others (I collect their books!). Working with Nick Gladstone I have developed my own mixes for Pioneer and medium leys. These incorporate different clover and grass species with some herbs for mineral provision, and an eye to deep rooting creation of organic matter within a hungry soil, naturally pH 5 or below. I use a higher than usual seed rate (up to 18 kgs per acre) which I broadcast either as a straight ley or as an undersowing to arable silage. I find the latter very beneficial as it helps to clean arable fields and the earlier removal of growth as silage allows the ley to get away for late summer and autumn quality grazing. Last year’s leys were particularly successful, bringing the cattle to fine condition, whilst making milk for suckled calves. I am pleased to say we came first in the beef herd competition at Hurstpierpoint Plough Match. Nick and Arthur, partners at Hurrells, have helped me develop my knowledge and have advised on suitable varieties available to the organic farmer. They provide the advice, service, and quality seeds, at an economical price. I have recommended them to friends and am happy to recognise their input to my grass improvement programme.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tim Gibson, Dairy Farmer North Yorkshire. "The 15 acres of the Cool Season grass mixture was sown on very light, drought-prone soil. The Ley got off to a bad start due to dry conditions and no rain until the end of June. Despite this, the ley established and demonstrated superior tillering to other grass sown at the same time. It has been cut twice for zero grazing at 5-6 inches. Analysis showed higher protein content that IRG. The ultimate judge was the cow. When cool season grasses were fed, med production increased."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Martin Howard, Organic Farmer. "Nick and the staff at Hurrells supply me with independent top quality advice for my organic farming enterprise. They are a small enough firm to be in front of the competition, with new ideas and concepts in organic farming. We try to look after the soils here on my farm and increase biological activity - we have even tested applying Mycorrhizal (Good Fungi) on grass seed with Hurrells and trialled the benefits. We look forward to working with them for many years to come."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mr T Sellers, Carr House Farm, Foston on the Wolds. "Hurrell & Mclean combine the reliability and service of a small family business with a good range of competitively priced products"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NCFP, North Cattleholmes Farming Partnership, Wansford. "We grew 50 acres of the HM.16 Red Clover mix, it not only gave us very good levels but also yielded fantastically, the best we have ever grown!"

Gamecover

John Bosworth - Grethwood Shoot. ‘’I am really pleased with my cover crop of ECLIPSE. I Selected the ECLIPSE mixture from the Hurrells catalogue as I recognised that I could spray this mix against broad leaf weeds for better weed control. So many cover crop mixes can't be sprayed and we have a Redshank/Redleg problem here on the shoot and have had for years. By using this mixture we post emergence sprayed the cover after a really good establishment and the ECLIPSE is now very healthy and clean. The crop is really well developed  and the maize in the mix is the best we have ever had and I'm delighted with the results, And we will definitely grow the ECLIPSE again next year.’’

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamekeeper Bill Constantine at Dunstall Estate. "I used Carbon to provide cover alongside some long term crops that were not doing so well. Planted at the end of July/ Early August and I was amazed by the rapid growth (see picture above after 9-10 weeks).  It provided excellent cover on 3 main drives, it saved the day & I will definitely order more next season! I also found that pigeons don't like it and I did not have any Flea Beetle problems due to the red stems."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan Whitehouse, Head Gamekeeper, Sydling Estate, Dorchester. "Exceptional service, Hurrells look after me superbly, the Cover Crops always grow very well and I couldn't ask for more... It's why I keep coming back..."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ivor Fox, Gamekeeper Shropshire. "Grew Carbon for the 1st time this year, established very quickly to a canopy. We planted some early and some very late. I noticed that the early sown material provided a good seed source, whilst the later sown Carbon maintained a Kale type appearance that is valuable in a rescue type situation, especially at flushing points."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mr John Robson, Proprietor Yorkshire Deer Stalking. "The staff at Hurrells have bent over backwards to supply me with the best quality seeds to establish both holding and driving covers on the shoot. Advice is only a phone call away."
